Right here in Plainville, CT, stands a world-renowned classic horror and sci-fi movie museum. Last weekend I toured the museum with the owner/ curator, Cortland Hull. The life-size wax figures of Hollywood's original monsters, set designs, authentic costumes, original props, and memorabilia are a true treasure to see.
In 1966, at the age of 13, Cortland Hull built the initial Witches Dragon Classic Movie Museum with the help of his father and mother, a costume designer. Cortland's artistic abilities and passion for classic movies continued to grow throughout his youth, and eventually, he made a career for himself as an artist and filmmaker.
The accuracy of Cortland's life-sized monsters began to gain notoriety, and Universal Studios commissioned him to create a figure of the "Wolf Man." Since that time, Cortland's monsters have traveled to exhibits throughout the nation. In addition, many famous actors, artists, and set designers have contributed to the museum over the years, and you can read more about its history on the website https://preservehollywood.org/history.
The Witches Dungeon Classic Movie Museum is open year-round Friday-Sunday evenings from 6 – 9 PM. Classic movie enthusiasts, horror and sci-fi fans, Halloween thrill-seekers will appreciate it is impressive!
This year the museum will host a Monster Holiday running from Thanksgiving to New Years. The sets will feature horror and sci-fi toys from the '50s, 60's and 70's as well as holiday decorations that will take you a step back in time.
Halloween is a wonderful time to enjoy the beautiful colors of Autumn in New England so take a drive to Plainville, stop by one of its cafés or restaurants, and visit the Witches Dungeon Classic Movie Museum for a slice of genuine horror pop culture!
